Facial Reterritorialities: Three Video Studies

Facial Reterritorialities begins from a simple but unstable proposition: the face never appears alone. Although the faciality machine presents the face as the privileged site of identity, meaning and recognition, the face always operates relationally.
The work is composed of three video studies: Face and Body, Face and Mask and Face and Landscape. Each video examines a different relation through which the face becomes operative. Together, they ask how the face carries meaning, how it redistributes that meaning across the image.
In Face and Body, the body is not treated as something that simply accompanies the face. Gesture, posture, skin, movement and presence are shown as elements that become reorganised once the face appears. A figure walks ahead of the camera, their identity withheld until the moment the head turns. This turn does not simply reveal identity; it retrospectively explains the body. The work examines how the face overcodes the body, fixing ambiguity into recognition.
In Face and Mask, different women appear wearing the niqab, revealing only the eyes. When the niqab is lifted, the face beneath does not appear as a neutral, but as one already shaped by the interpretive force of the mask. The work suggests that both face and mask belong to the same apparatus: both produce visibility, meaning and social judgement. The mask is a face.
In Face and Landscape, the work revisits the logic of the Kuleshov Effect, asking not only how context gives meaning to the face, but how different faces impose meaning onto their surroundings. Neutral faces of different racialised identities are intercut with repeated scenes, suggesting that the face can reterritorialise the visual field and alter the affective meaning of space itself.
These three videos do not function as separate case studies, but as three ways of studing the face: how the face as a semiotic construct operates through relation.
